SCAPA and Education

One of SCAPA's main purposes is to provide quality education for the members. All education sessions offered at the state and most at the district level have been pre-approved by NCCAP to assure the hours meet the requirements for certification or re-certification. SCAPA is committed to offering the best education available. We also offer varied educational sessions to meet the needs of those working in all settings; from nursing homes to assisted living to independent living to Alzheimer care centers to adult day care and to senior centers. SCAPA has something for everyone!

Each of the districts offer free sessions throughout the year within the four areas of the state, to SCAPA members. Any member is welcome to attend these, even if it is held in a disrtict outside their own.

SCAPA hosts an annual three-day conference in February. There are usually 10-11 NCCAP approved clock hours offered. For this conference, we bring in at least one national level speaker and often more. We offer 12 concurrent sessions on Thursday, in four time slots. This allows members to choose a topic that meets their needs and applies to their place of employment. We also hold our annual Awards banquet at this conference and use this time to honor outstanding professionals, volunteers, Administrators and supporters in the field. This is a great time to gain new knowledge as well as network with colleagues from throughout the state. This conference travels around the state to a different district each year. In 2007, we were in Charleston and in 2008, we will be in Columbia.

In July, SCAPA hosts a one-day workshop in the Columbia area, which is central to everyone. It is pre-approved typically for 6 hours of NCCAP credit.

In September, SCAPA offers an Activity Assistant's workshop for a day, also usually in Columbia. There are normally 4 sessions for the assistants and 5-6 NCCAP approved credit hours. This gives the Assistant's, who often cannot go to the conference along with the Director, a chance to gain education and increase their knowledge.

If you have any particular educational needs, suggestions for a topic or suggestions for a speaker, please feel free to contact us. We are here to help you get the education you need.

SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION

SCAPA  offers scholarships for SCAPA members to attend the annual conference in February, as well as the Activity Assistant's workshop in September. One scholarship per district is awarded for each conference/workshop. SCAPA understands that everyone occasionally needs financial assistance to attend the conference and workshop. The scholarship covers the cost of the confernce registration fees only. It does not cover hotel or other expenses. All information is kept confidential and the names of those awarded the scholarships are also kept in confidence. If you are interested in applying for a scholarship, please contact the Professional Development Chair.  Forms can also be printed at this site and are located under the "Forms and Downloads" page. Deadlines for submitting the applications are on the forms.
